FRIDAY NPE 2018 : THE PLASTICS SHOW SHOW DAILY By Mahew H. Naitove Plascs Technology Krauss-Maffei (Booth W403) is adding a wrinkle to its technolo- gy for lightweight, high-strength thermoplasঞc composites. It is overmolding composite organo- sheets with both a rigid thermo- plasঞc for funcঞonal purposes and so[-touch TPE for consumer com- fort, producing an auto armrest. Mulঞ-materials in micromolding are featured by Wimann Baen- feld (Booth W3742) in its MicroPo- wer Combimould unit with two parallel injecঞon barrels and a mold with a rotaঞng plate. LSR-on-LSR mulঞcomponent molding is on view at two booths. Arburg (Booth W1325) has two cells running two-shot LSR/LSR applicaঞons—a two-color, dual- durometer watch band and a dual- durometer membrane for valves. And CAE simulaঞon so[ware provider Sigma Plasঞc Services (Booth S30023) is molding a two-color LSR egg cup and comparing the actual results with its "Virtual Molding" predicঞon. Use of retrofiable secondary injecঞon units to convert standard machines to mulঞcomponent molding is being shown by Boy Machines (Booth W2503), producing a wine-bole spout by overmolding NAS styrene-acrylic with TPE. And Milacron (Booth W2703) is running its new Quantum toggle press with a Mold-Masters E-Mulঞ auxiliary injector to produce a two-color, double-walled drinking cup. E-Mulঞ also figures in Milacron's new Kortec Connect program, which allows running Kortec co-injecঞon hot-runner systems on a standard press. Kortec technology produces three-layer barrier containers or preforms for stretch-blow molding. Two other firms highlighঞng barrier co-injected preforms are Netstal and Husky Injecঞon Molding Systems. Netstal (Booth S16088) is showing off the Prelacঞa system for three-layer light-barrier PET preforms for UHT milk. Husky (Booth W1303) is highlighঞng its mulঞ-layer co-injecঞon technology. Rapid's New Granulators for In-Line Thermoforming By Heather Caliendo Plascs Technology Size-reducঞon equipment specialist Rapid Granulator is introducing a new range of granulators designed specifically to process skeletal waste in-line from thermoforming lines. The new ThermoPRO Series is avail- able for handling widths from 600 to 1,500 mm and is available in stan- dard and low-built formats. A ThermoPRO 400-90 for granulaঞng webs up to 900-mm wide is on dis- play in the company's booth, W953 in Hall A. ThermoPRO machines combine features already proven on other Rapid granulators—double-scissor cuমng acঞon, an "open-hearted" design for fast producঞon change- overs and ease of maintenance, and a mineral composite base for high stability and low noise. "Thermoforming companies live or die according to how well they handle and recycle their trim," Bengt Rimark, president Rapid Granulator notes. "Skeletal waste can easily account for up to 30-40 percent of their total throughput, so it is criঞcal that the trimmed material is returned to the process as cost-effecঞvely as possible. The savings that the converter can make are enor- mous." The ThermoPRO Series has been designed to operate around the clock. "With conঞnu- ously running thermoforming operaঞons, feeding material constantly and consistently into the granulator is criঞcal," Rimark says. Modular construcঞon was criঞcal to the overall concept of the ThermoPRO. "Some machines push out the skeletal waste upwards, some downwards, some even sideways," Rimark says. "We needed to be able to adapt the overall design to fit into any of these scenarios." He also highlights the challenge of making the equipment as compact as possible, since many thermoforming lines operate in very ঞght spaces. The ThermoPRO uses a heavy-duty roller feed as standard, enabling problem-free handling of the skeletal waste. This even makes it possible to run several webs into the granulator at the same ঞme. It also facilitates granulaঞon at the start-up of a thermoforming line, when the parts are not stamped out of the sheet, meaning that the enঞre web, trim and parts together, need to be fed into the granulator.
