FRIDAY NPE 2018 : THE PLASTICS SHOW SHOW DAILY We strive to advance the performance of our customers' end products by delivering a broad portfolio of innovative polymers that are found in nearly every sector of the economy. Visit us in room W206 or go to lyb.com/NPE. Wire and Cable Coatings Textiles Water Pipes Food Packaging Automotive Exteriors/Interiors lyondellbasell.com/NPE Making Better Products Possible NPE2018 New Technology Focus Bioplasঞcs, PCR-Engineered Compounds Beat the Heat Eastman's engineering bioplasঞc is said to be ideal for structural applicaঞons with good aestheঞcs and excellent opঞcal performance in electronic displays. By Lilli Manolis Sherman Plascs Technology Applicaঞons such as office furniture, kitchen cabinets, bath- room toilets, sinks and lids, as well as automoঞve for a new engineering bioplasঞc are being featured by Eastman Chemi- cal Co. (Room S230D). Last year, the company launched Treva, an engineering bioplasঞc that falls in the family of cellulose acetate propionate (CAP) but boasts a significantly higher heat deflecঞon temperature (HDT) than standard CAP, mak- ing it more dimensionally stable and creep resistant. Low bi- refringence for excellent opঞcal performance in electronic displays, and excellent flow characterisঞcs that enable design freedom, allow Treva to be used with complicated parts and in filling thin walls. It is said to be ideal for structural applicaঞons with good aestheঞcs—from kitchen walls to home and office furniture—and durable for daily wear and tear. It can also address the needs of automoঞve interior designers seeking curved surfaces and shapes. Excellent chemical resistance and ability to withstand contact with skin oils and sunscreens make it suitable for bathroom toilets and eyeglass frames, respecঞvely. Total Corbion PLA (S35085) is highlighঞng its Luminy PLA porolio for the Americas. Included are a range of high-heat, high-performance crosslinked PLA homopolymer resins—PLLA & PDLA, which are targeted to applicaঞons requiring durabili- ty and/or high-heat resistance. Visitors can see several com- mercial applicaঞons including coffee capsules, tea bags, heat-stable IBM bo•les, and a thermoformed black food plat- ter that has a stone-look, slate appearance. Wellman Advanced Materials (S12189) is emphasizing its integrated operaঞons that have made it a global supplier of nylon, TPO, PP resins and PET fibers for the automoঞve, lawn and garden, consumer products, and electronics industries, as well as one of the long-ঞme leaders in "green" manufacturing, due to high levels of post-consumer recycle (PCR) content. Materials launched within the last year include: EcoLon 3100- BK1, which is a PCR nylon 6 boasঞng superior flow and per- formance properঞes and be•er cost efficiency vs. current EcoLon 2100 for use in automoঞve parts like fan shrouds. The EcoLon GFT3040-BK1 is a first-of-its-kind impact-modified PCR nylon 6 with superior low-temperature impact, minimum thermal expansion and high heat deflecঞon temperature. It boasts comparable performance to a virgin nylon 6 with sig- nificant cost savings and sustainability. The EcoLon 1619-BK3GB, a 20% glass fiber/mineral reinforced PCR nylon 6, is said to offer a 19% weight reducঞon, yet is comparable in cost and performance with equivalent virgin grades. Techmer (S27015) is highlighঞng its collaboraঞve project with recycler Envision Plasঞcs Industries, Primal Group, and bo•le blow molder Classic Containers, to create a compound from 100% reclaimed, ocean-found plasঞcs to make a person- al-care bo•le with a silver metallic, pearlescent-effect finish. Using its proprietary dispersion technology, Techmer PM was able to successfully meet Primal Group's requirements for a specific color and reflecঞve finish on the bo•le. Get into the Zone: Business and Finance By Hannah Mason Plascs Technology The Business and Finance Zone is back at NPE2018 as the spot for professionals who manage the business side of the plasঞcs industry. Glenn Anderson, chairman of NPE2018 and vice pres- ident, strategic account development for Milacron, says, "This is a place where a•endees can meet with companies that serve manufacturing in various other areas, like insurance and finance." The 4,600 net square foot exhibit space includes exhibitors from publishing, educaঞon, research, transportaঞon, banking, so[ware development, consulঞng and more. One exhibitor in this zone is Smart A•end, a company that produces advanced monitoring technology for manufacturing. Notes Max Preston, director of sales and markeঞng, "We allow companies to send informaঞon in real ঞme to managers and faciliঞes, wherever they are, through the Smart A•end Android and iOS apps as well as the Google Chrome web access portal. So, essenঞally we allow people to see what their cycle ঞmes are, how many parts they've made, what their upঞme is, what their downঞme is, whether they're on schedule or going to meet their producঞon deadline or they're behind schedule or if they're ahead of schedule." "My audience at NPE are the average molders," Preston says. "that run small- to medium-sized faciliঞes that are going to be looking for new technology at a low acquisiঞon cost. They're the people wanঞng to join this whole Industry 4.0 without spending a million dollars and we can help them with that." 24
