WEDNESDAY NPE 2018 : THE PLASTICS SHOW SHOW DAILY Something New: Coffee Capsules in PLA with IML Emerson Debuts the Branson GLX-2 Laser, Which Enables Simultaneous Heaঞng and Plasঞcizing Making its North American debut here in Orlando (Booth W3763) is the Branson GLX-2 Laser Welder. Unlike trace laser systems, the GLX-2 Laser Welder uses the patented Simultaneous Thru-Transmission Infrared (STTIr) process to heat and plasঞcize the enঞre weld line simultaneously, resulঞng in precise, ঞght-tolerance welds of medium- to-large-sized parts much faster than trace lasers. IML single-serve coffee capsule machine from Beck Automaঞon. Beck Automaঞon of Switzerland (Booth S35146) is showing for the first ঞme in the Americas an IML system for single-serve cof- fee capsules. Both the capsules and the la- bels (from Verstraete in Belgium) are of PLA biopolymer. The four-cavity mold is expected to run at 6-7 sec on a 120-m.t. Netstal Elion 1200 all-electric press. The cell includes a quality check with a vision system from IMDvista. Exhibits Return to Hall F for NPE2018; Other New Exhibit Areas in West, South Hall Find new innovaঞons and new technology! Renovaঞons are complete in Hall F—located in the West Building of the OCCC—making way for exhibits to return to Hall F, now known as the Tangerine Ballroom. To accommodate addiঞonal exhibits for this year, NPE2018 has expanded into Meeঞng Room W230, which is located off the E/F Lobby in the West Building. And a second area of expansion is in the South Building. S230BC is located off the South Concourse near the bridge that connects to the Hilton Orlando. 86 Visit us at Booth #W5791 SCREEN CHANGERS • MELT PUMPS • MIXERS • PACKAGED SYSTEMS What more can you get from your process? • Precise dimensional control • Better melt integrity • Stabilized output • Increased yield • Higher use of reg rind I ndustry 's most reliable Melt Pu mp From through-hardened gears to high-wear bearings to leak-free, anti-galling seals, PSI melt pumps provide you consistent, trouble-free performance, yea r after year. Many consumers take for granted—or are simply unaware of—the array of benefits plasঞcs offer. All too o[en, those in the industry are le[ wondering what to say when conversaঞon with family or friends turns to ocean debris, BPA or plasঞc bag bans. This Is Plascs (ThisIsPlasঞ is a feature-rich resource designed to frame that conversa- ঞon with facts. Arঞcles, infographics and interacঞve quizzes highlight five key topics—Plasঞcs 101, Environment, Safety, Innovaঞon, and Economic Impact. On the Innovaon front? Plasঞc has so many astonishing uses. It takes on an integral role in building, construcঞon, food packaging, transportaঞon and addiঞve manufacturing. Perhaps it is in the medical field that improvements from plasঞcs are the most profound. Mia Quinn, vice president of communicaঞons for the Plasঞcs Industry Associaঞon, says, "I am most impressed by the everyday plasঞcs that we take for granted, like plasঞc implants that can help bring sound back to the ears of people with severely impaired hearing, and pill capsules that create ঞme-release dosages of medicine." A peek at a few more cool facts from the site: Plasঞc is now the primary material used in the construcঞon of arঞficial limbs, and the special properঞes of plasঞc will enable the creaঞon, in the near future, of mobile limbs with plasঞc muscles and even self-healing arঞficial skin. Plasঞc is also a superior material for hip-socket replacements, and can even be used to create arঞficial corneas using extremely thin, highly transparent silicone. Addiঞve manufacturing, also known as 3D prinঞng, is also responsible for amazing medical invenঞons. Doctors have used 3D-printed plasঞc to replace 75 percent of a person's skull. Furthermore, according to Quinn, "With vibraঞonal therapy, a 3D-printed cast can heal bone 40 to 80 percent faster." Seizure medicaঞon has even been created using addiঞve manufactur- ing, a process which allows it to be absorbed into the bloodstream much faster than normal medicaঞon. These are just a few of the awe-inspiring results of an industry that conঞnues to generate new uses for plasঞcs every day. Visit ThisIsPlasঞ to check out the online toolkit and arm yourself and your team with pride in the industry you serve.
