WEDNESDAY NPE 2018 : THE PLASTICS SHOW SHOW DAILY 'Cobot' Pioneer Makes NPE Debut By Mahew H. Naitove Plascs Technology Universal Robots' line of "cobots" (Booth S27189) reduce or eliminate the need for guarding by stopping safely upon inadvertent operator contact. A first-ঞme exhibitor at NPE, Universal Robots of Denmark (with three U.S. regional offices), is here at the show to address the growing interest among plasঞcs processors in the new automa- ঞon category of "collaboraঞve" robots and to educate them in how they can be used to free up workers from repeঞঞve pick-and-place tasks. "Our product is uniquely posiঞoned to address the pain points of plasঞcs manufacturers, such as ঞghtening labor markets, rapidly changing producঞon lines, and the need to constantly lower overhead costs," says Brian Dillman, area sales manager for Universal Robots (UR). Besides modest cost and easy programmability, a standout feature of these "cobots," as some are now calling them, is that they "reduce or eliminate the need for guarding, which means a significantly reduced footprint. They stop safely on operator contact and can be moved with minimal force" according to Sean Dotson, president and CEO of RND Automaঞon & Engineering, a UR partner that is exhibiঞng its new Kanga Poucher in the UR booth (S27189). Kanga is a verঞcal form/fill/seal pouching system that forms four-sided pouches from film for medical devices, pharmaceuঞcal packaging, and durable goods. In the booth, a small UR cobot is feeding products into the system. A second demo at the UR booth involves a bulk box loader from Dyco Inc., a firm that spe- cializes in automated systems to move and pack plasঞc boŽles. It uses a "guardless" UR cobot to grab a row of boŽles—commonly by the necks—off a conveyor and transfer them to a box or tray. The company also makes palleঞzers. The safety of working around UR cobots enables an operator to remove a fully packed box while the cobot starts filling another. The box loader is controlled from the UR cobot interface. The system is designed for easy setup on a self-con- tained plate that can be moved among mulঞple blow molding lines running different boŽle and box sizes. Other places to see UR cobots at work around the show: • Cold Jet (Booth W483) is using a UR cobot to clean automoঞve mirrors with dry-ice blasঞng. • Proco Machinery Inc. (Booth W983) uses UR cobots in its new collaboraঞve Half-Cube Palleঞzer system and its Robot-Packer—both for handling blow molded containers. New Name in Energy-Efficient Presses from China Führung is a relaঞvely new brand of Chinese injecঞon molding machines, created in 2013 by Ningbo Leadway Machinery Technology Co. (Booth W9242). Its Blaze II servo-hydraulic toggle presses are on display in Orlando. The line extends from 100 to 1,300 m.t. Features include injecঞon units that ride on guide rails and have been strategically lightened to enhance acceleraঞon response. The clamp has a wider and longer platen guide, with graphite-copper bushings on the ঞerods, T-slot platen for fast mold mounঞng, European-style ejectors, and a three-color tower light with alarm. The machine comes with a nozzle purge guard and has provisions to accept "extras" like a Euromap robot interface, two sets of core pulls, automaঞc grease lubricaঞon pump, non-opera- tor-side safety gate and open machine base with room for a conveyor. Führung servo-hydraulic toggle presses debut in North America at NPE2018. Maximize Your Experience With the NPE2018 App By Hannah Mason Plascs Technology Download the free NPE2018: The Plasঞcs Show! app to take advantage of all the show has to offer. This isn't just a map of the show floor (although it has that, too)—you can use the app to search for and plan out your enঞre show experience. Here are a few of its features: • Floor plans of the South and West buildings • Complete exhibitor lisঞngs with booth numbers, company profiles, staff info and product categories • Schedules, descripঞons and speaker details about the nine educaঞon confer- ences/workshops • General informaঞon and announce- ments, including info about registraঞon, show hours and shuŽle schedules • My Show Planner, which syncs to your Map Your Show site and allows you to save exhibitors and events that you want to see What's the best feature? "That aŽendees are able to build their schedule," says Teena Pham, markeঞng manager for Trade Shows at the Plasঞcs Industry Associaঞon. "App users can arrange meeঞngs, bookmark exhibitors they want to see and idenঞfy sessions and events they'd like to aŽend. The app will sync with their My Show Planner on Map Your Show so aŽendees will have their schedule available at all ঞmes no maŽer where they are or what device they're using." The app is available for free download on iOS or Android.
