By Mahew H. Naitove Plascs Technology Foam molding is seeing increased aŽenঞon in the market- place and is on display at several injecঞon and blow molding booths in Orlando. New developments include the U.S. debut of the Plasঞnum foam injecঞon molding process from Linde LLC (Booth S24207), a leading supplier of industrial gases. This process involves impregnaঞng plasঞc pellets with carbon dioxide gas in a pressurized chamber, or autoclave. Gas-load- ed pellets can then be conveyed to the hopper(s) of one or more molding machines. The hopper is not sealed or under pressure, since gas will remain in the pellets at ambient condi- ঞons for 4-6 hours. No modificaঞons to the injecঞon press are required, except for use of a shutoff nozzle. More new tech- nology for physical foam molding is be- ing introduced at NPE2018 by Trexel (Booth W551), whose new dosing equipment reported- ly allows thin-wall molders to lightweight products to a level never before possible. The new MuCell P-Series delivers ni- trogen under pressure as a supercriঞcal fluid and is able to do so at ultra-fast cycle ঞmes not previously possible with Trex- el's T-Series dosing equipment. Now, thin-wall packaging molders will be able to achieve 6% lightweighঞng, 7% faster cycles, 30% lower clamp tonnage, and 12% lower injecঞon pressure, according to Trexel. Trexel is using the P-Series to mold what it calls a "groundbreaking" 6-oz (200-ml) yogurt cup with IML. Using Stack- Teck TRIM technology, it has ultra-thin-wall panels of only 0.008 inches (0.2 mm). Trexel also is promoঞng what it calls "the first-ever design service dedicated to foamed components." 2Limit is a joint ven- ture of Trexel and GK Concept of Dresden, Germany, a specialist in product development, FEM calcula- ঞons, filling simulaঞon, prototyping, tool design and mold tri- als. This venture is intended to fill a gap in the marketplace, making it easier to find design engineers skilled in the art of foamed part design—who know how to "break the rules" of convenঞonal design for injecঞon molding. MuCell microcellular foaming can be seen at several more booths besides Trexel's: Engel (Booth W3303) uses MuCell together with its new DecoJect in-mold decoraঞng process to provide uniform low-pressure packing and avoid sink marks and read-through of mold features. Milacron (Booth W2703) is using MuCell to produce an SUV door panel with map pocket using Milacron's "Core Back/ Reverse Coining" technique, whereby the mold is closed and then opened to a predefined posiঞon to allow foam expan- sion. Milacron achieves a Class-A surface on its MuCell foamed part using Roctool "Heat & Cool" technology with rapid inducঞon heaঞng. Yizumi-HPM (Booth W3343) also uses MuCell together with rapid-heat/cool mold technology (based on a special TCU from Single Temperature Controls), a combinaঞon it calls Yizumi FoamPro. Foam blow molding is also claiming aŽenঞon at NPE2018. W. Müller USA (Booth W1983) is celebraঞng the first com- mercial applicaঞon (20 L agricultural chemical containers) for its trilayer foam-core process, which involves injecঞng gas into the extrusion head. And Wilmington Machinery (Booth W1823) is talking about foam blow molding on wheel, recip- rocaঞng-screw or accumulator-head machines. Applicaঞons could include boŽles to large (40-gal) industrial containers and automoঞve parts such as tanks for fluids other than fuel. It's Easy to Plan Your Week With more than a million square feet of show floor to cover as well as dozens of educaঞon sessions to aŽend, organizing your NPE experience might seem overwhelming. NPE has once again partnered with Map Your Show (MYS) to make it easier to create a plan and use it to navigate your days at the show. Visit npe18.mapyourshow.com. Click on the My Show Planner link, enter a few key pieces of informaঞon and start compiling your must-see list of exhibitors. Sessions, events and personal appointments can also be added to your Planner which can then be ex- ported straight to your Outlook cal- endar. Right here at the show, your Planner can be accessed on the NPE mobile app where you'll find everything you entered synchronized to your phone or tablet. Easily locate companies on the show floor, check out ex- hibit highlights, engage in social media and even review in- formaঞon about Orlando. 36
