We are in an expansion mode and would consider acquisiঞons, capacity expansions, and further product development," says Joseph Serell, vice president of Sun Plastech, manufacturer of the Asaclean brand of purging compounds, adding that the company's R&D operaঞon cur- rently has 10 full-ঞme engineers on board. Indicaঞve of this direcঞon is the company's 2015 acquisiঞon of Novachem, which added a family of chemical purging agents to its arse- nal of mechanical purging compounds. Serell gave Plascs Technology a quick glimpse of how things have changed in this industry: "The adopঞon of purg- ing compounds each year becomes greater and greater. Twenty years ago, we aimed to educate processors and com- pounders as to why they ought to consider use of commercial purging compounds in terms of efficiency and cost benefits. This is no longer the case, as they (purging compounds) have become widely accepted. So, now we aim to address ques- ঞons such as how much money we can save them or how to address specific problems." Many processors are doing far more color and material changes and many are specializing in shorter runs, making the need for a good commercial purging compound more crucial, he explains. The company is addressing these trends and others, such as the frequent introducঞon of new specialty resin grades, including higher-heat engineering resins, for example. As such, the company has developed purging compounds that have heat resis- tance to 790°F. More- over, says Serell, Sun Plastech has seen the need to address other processes such as blown film and blow molding with new grades. Unঞl recently, blown film processors have not been big users of commercial purging compounds, owing to long runs with fewer material changes, according to Serell. He notes that the company is introducing new purging compounds of both varieঞes—mechanical and chemical—that meet the specific needs of this process. He explains that the key for these processors is not having to re-string the bubble. As such, film processors want a purging compound that holds the bubble, and runs through quickly, with the new resin close behind. As an example, he cites a change from a colored to a clear resin. "This is more of a consultaঞve sale in that we offer a consultaঞon on how to solve a problem based on their process. We narrow down the problem and make our recommendaঞon." In the case of blow molding, meanwhile, the company is focusing on its acquired N-Series of chemical purging com- pounds, as they excel in creaঞng pressure and agitaঞon. This is key in blow molding, Serell says. In blow molding, resin typi- cally flows at low speeds with lile pressure. "Part of the chemical reacঞon causes an expansion of the purging agent— expanding into areas where mechanical purging compounds might not be able to reach." Computed Tomography in the Plasঞcs By Heather Caliendo Plascs Technology Zeiss Industrial Metrology is focusing on the benefits of CT inspecঞon in plasঞcs at NPE2018. Computed tomography is an inspecঞon technology that can be networked and used along the enঞre process chain. The company says it offers many ad- vantages compared to other measuring procedures, parঞcularly in the plasঞcs industry. When it comes to tool correcঞon, Zeiss says it offers coordi- nated soluঞons to ensure the enঞre tool correcঞon process is efficient. For instance, the company's Zeiss Metrotom is an industrial computer tomograph for measuring and inspecঞng complete components made of plasঞc, and numerous compo- nent characterisঞcs are scanned in one run. In addiঞon, with Zeiss Reverse Engineering so[ware, the CAD model of the injecঞon molding tool can be corrected using the nominal data of a plasঞc component and the actual data generated using the Metrotom. By using both processes, iteraঞon loops can be re- portedly reduced and shortened for tool correcঞon. The Zeiss Metrotom is an industrial computer tomograph for measuring and inspecঞng complete components made of plasঞc. "Visit as many different processors as you can. See how they make things, see all the different processes. If you are in one plant, learn how everything is done, and gradually you will see where the issues are.
