FLEXIBILITY WITH TECHNOLOGY TO THE POINT. West Building Booth W143 NPE2018 New Technology Focus: Mix of New Materials By Lilli Manolis Sherman Plascs Technology Plexiglas LED Bloc is said to be changing the face of store-front signage with its thin, modern profile. Two new families of flexible PVC compounds are spotlighted by Teknor Apex (Booth S22045). Apex 1523-LG Series compounds, designed for automoঞve window encapsulaঞon, are said to exhibit gloss levels similar to those of EPDM rubber beltline seals or glass run channels, enabling manufacturers of PVC encapsulated windows to meet OEM demand for a closer match in the surface finish of these criঞcal appearance parts. These compounds achieve a gloss level in the 3 to 4 range without need for surface treat- ment of the tooling. Compared to standard window encapsu- laঞon PVC compounds which are in the 9 to 12 range, Apex 1523 compounds eliminate the cost associated with tooling maintenance and repair to keep a consistent surface appear- ance from part-to-part. This series has several OEM approvals such as GM's GMW-16084 spec for quarter windows and sunroofs from Chrysler. Apex 2324A2 Series compounds are made with ingredients listed under California Proposiঞon 65 and are said to provide similar performance to standard compounds used in indoor and outdoor building products. The eight compounds in the series have Shore A hardness ranging from 55 to 90, are opaque grades that are said to extrude well across a wide temperature range, and in some cases are suitable for co-ex- trusion with rigid PVC. Wellman Advanced Materials (Booth S12189) is featuring the latest addiঞons to its specialty PP line geared to automo- ঞve including: Pret A422-G30, a 30 percent short glass reinforced PP that has had its first applicaঞon in the U.S. with an automoঞve OEM in a grille-opening reinforcement panel. It boasts excel- lent appearance and performance. Pret A422-LG60 is one of the company's newest long-glass fiber PP products. Shanghai PRET has been a leader in LFT (long fiber thermoplasঞcs) in Asia, and since its acquisiঞon of Wellman, it has expanded into the North American and European markets. This material was used in the first in- strument panel substrate applicaঞon for a new BMW model produced here. Arkema's subsidiary Altuglas (S34146) is showcasing its new Plexiglas Sylk acrylic which boasts an excepঞonal combi- naঞon of diffusion and light transmission, with maximum LED hiding power lighঞng and skylight/luminary applicaঞons, but also furniture, privacy parঞঞons, and POP displays due to its so[, smooth texture and modern finish. Altuglas is also highlighঞng the expansion of its Plexiglas ELiT Series acrylics posiঞoned as a new opঞon for larger edge- lit signs while maintaining a slim and modern appearance, as well as Altuglas LED Bloc which is changing the face of store- front signage with its thin, modern profile and ability to be used independently without the addiঞonal components previ- ously required for signage. For automoঞve, Altuglas is featuring Plexiglas HT121-LPL, a highly heat-resistant acrylic resin, formulated specifically for long path length (LPL) applicaঞons, such as signature lighঞng and thick lenses. In addiঞon to the already robust opঞcal properঞes, chemical resistance, and outdoor stability of Plexi- glas resins, HT121-LPL is said to have much improved light transmission and heat stability, ensuring the polymer's water- white clarity is maintained a[er injecঞon molding and in its end-use applicaঞon. PolyOne (Room S230BC) is highlighঞng new FireCon CPE, a flame-retardant chlorinated PE for wire and cable, said to resist acids, alakalis, oils, fuels, solvents and extreme temperatures. Healthy Interest in Medical By Mahew H. Naitove Plascs Technology Medical devices and disposables remain an especially a•racঞve market for plasঞcs—and plasঞcs machinery. Several injecঞon press makers are addressing this market with molding demos. • Engel (Booth W3303), for example, is repeaঞng an im- pressive feat from K 2016 by molding eight interdental brushes, each with up to 500 ঞny bristles, and a total shot weight of only 1.93 g. • KraussMaffei (Booth W403) is molding LSR medical parts. • Netstal (Booth S16088) is running pipe•e ঞps in 128 caviঞes at a cycle ঞme of 5.6 sec. • Sumitomo (SHI) Demag (Booth W3045) is mold- ing eight thin-wall medi- cal dosing cups in 3 sec. • Wi•mann Ba•enfeld (Booth W3742) is molding PP pipe•es in eight caviঞes on an EcoPower all-electric "cleanroom machine." • Absolute Haiঞan (Booth W143) is running an in-dwell- ing needle body of cellulose acetate propionate in eight caviঞes. • Arburg (Booth W1325) is micromolding a dual- durometer LSR/LSR membrane for valves used in medical and automoঞve applicaঞons. • Other medical parts are being run at Boy Machines (Booth W2503) and Yizumi-HPM (Booth W3343). Be sure to catch these MOLDING DEMOS live on the show floor! 30
