TUESDAY N PE 2 018 M AY 8 TH Packaging: The Roads of Innovaঞon Meet at Sustainability By María Natalia Ortega Leyva Plascs Technology México Across the supply chain, innovaঞons in packaging are focusing on soluঞons to improve its environmental footprint. While there are various technologies and methods available, their impact depends on applicaঞons and contexts. Some years ago, "sustainable packaging" gained ground in markeঞng strategies of the enঞre value chain. But what mega-trends are shaping the sustainable packaging industry? The concept of sustainable packaging encompasses design and material choice and structure, performance in a selected applicaঞon, and ulঞmately what happens a[er the consumer is done with it. According to Adam Gendell, associate director of the Sustainable Packaging Coaliঞon (SPC), sustainable packag- es must have minimal life cycle impact and be part of a system that can be indefinitely perpetuated. Kim Holmes, vice president of sustainability of the Plasঞcs Industry Associaঞon (PLASTICS), says that the associaঞon is a big proponent of the sustainable material management model, which relies on lifecycle analysis of each material and looking at all the impact areas through the course of a product lifecycle to determine the environmental benefits. "The benefits are going to vary from packaging to packaging and from applica- ঞon to applicaঞon. We encourage our members have a holisঞc approach, to look at lifecycle impact as a whole." David Clark, vice president of Safety, Environment and Sus- tainability at packaging processor Amcor, notes that many cus- tomers are seমng goals to improve the environmental ari- butes of their packaging. In response, Amcor is innovaঞng new technologies, materials and life cycle strategies that include light-weighঞng, increasing post-consumer recycled (PCR) con- tent, extending shelf life and recyclability. Berry Global also has a mulঞ-faceted strategy that values recyclability, reusability, light-weighঞng, recycled content and renewable content. "Our customers have different prioriঞes that may value certain aributes over others. As a soluঞons provider, we strive to offer a variety of soluঞons to meet all of our customers' needs," says Robert Flores, the company's di- rector of sustainability. On the material supply side, Dow Chemical Co., for one, is focusing on packaging efficiency as an integral trend that con- templates various pillars: sustainability, converঞng producঞvi- ty, recyclability and consumer experience. "If a package for fruit allows to minimize the waste of food, you can say that the package is sustainable for reducing that value chain carbon footprint. If packaging has an improvement in the producঞvity of its manufacturing process, you can say that it is sustainable because you save in producঞon resources like water or elec- tricity. You can also downgauge and reduce the thickness of package and produce more product with the same amount of material. That is also sustainability," according to Marcus Vini- cius Carvalho Dow Chemical, Laঞn America Markeঞng Manag- er for Food & Specialty Packaging. "Consumers expect industry to address sustainability issues, and we're seeing direct and indirect effects of those expecta- ঞons. The average consumer understanding of sustainable packaging is limited to issues like recyclability and weight mini- The concept of sustainable packaging encompasses design and material choice and structure, performance in a selected applicaঞon, and ulঞmately what happens a[er the consumer is done with it. Plasঞcs TV on the NPE Network By Heather Caliendo Plascs Technology The must-see moments from both on and off the show floor at NPE2018 are being broadcast on the NPE Network. "Recognizing that our aendees are hard-pressed to see it all in five days, we are helping connect aendees with the new NPE Network studio, featuring live interviews and show news programs spotlighঞng all the excitement and innovaঞon at the event," says Susan Krys, vice president of trade shows and markeঞng for PLASTICS. Catch the NPE Network in a variety of places: • Played on projecঞon screens around the OCCC and      monitors in various areas • The NPE2018 Official App and Website • Played on shule buses to and from the OCCC • Broadcast on TV in show hotel rooms mizaঞon, so we're seeing a number of brands and retailers focus their efforts on recyclability and weight opঞmizaঞon. But the indirect effect is important, too. Brand trust is earned by taking a leadership posiঞon on the important issues, even if the average consumer doesn't know what those issues are," says SPC's Gendell. NPE2018 features prominent exhibitors with innovaঞons in materials, recycling and light-weighঞng on the show floor, as well as at Re|focus Sustainability & Recycling Summit and Re|focus Zone, co-located events with NPE2018. 17
