MONDAY NPE 2018 : THE PLASTICS SHOW SHOW DAILY Excellence by Design in the IDSA Design Center NPE2018 New Technology Focus: Look for More Versaঞle and Improved Efficiency Purging Compounds By Lilli Manolis Sherman Plascs Technology Asaclean/Sun Plastech (W3283) is featuring its new UF2 purging compound said to be ideal for blown and cast film extrusion, as well as injecঞon molding. Like other Asaclean grades, UF2 is said to enable faster change- overs, resulঞng in increased producঞvity and cost savings. It can be purged through a die, effecঞvely removes gels and color and car- bon contaminaঞon that is not carbonized and has excellent compaঞbility with PE. It's rec- ommended for color and resin changes, hot runner cleaning and shutdown/sealing. As it does not work by chemical reacঞon, there is no soak ঞme or hold-up ঞme. Asaclean is also emphasizing its N-Series of chemical purging compounds from its 2015 acquisiঞon of Novachem: NCR Grade (formerly Supernova Regular), a versaঞle, high performance chemical purging com- Shell Chemicals Launches New Business: Shell Polymers pound well suited for color and material changes for thermoplasঞc injecঞon molding and extrusion machines; NCT Grade (former- ly Supernova HT), a chemical purging com- pound for high-temperature resins such as Ultem, PEEK and LCPs that can process at temperatures as high as 750°F; NCF Grade (formerly Supernova FD), a high-performance chemical purging compound well suited for color and material changes for thermoplasঞc film systems, including both flexible and rigid PVCs; and NCH Grade (formerly Hybrid 400), a high-performance compound said to offer the benefits of both mechanical and chemical purging agents and is suited for color and material changes for thermoplasঞc extrusion and extrusion blow molding machines. Shuman Plasঞcs (W2762) is launching its new Dyna-Purge F2, described as a "break- through technology" with proprietary agents formulated to flow naturally through a variety of processing equipment including injecঞon and extrusion applicaঞons. The low-residue purging agent features one component for- mulated to flow to the boundary layer, flush- ing out the resin. Another component acts as a pressurizing agent, allowing the purge to reach stagnaঞon points. This dual-acঞon cleaning removes material and impuriঞes from the screw and barrel, as well as tool and die. With a temperature range of 320-625°F, it is reportedly effecঞve at purging virtually all resins with reliable re- sults. This safe, non-hazardous and FDA-compliant compound is said to be ideal for purging hot runners and other channels with ঞght clearances. iD Addiঞves Inc. (S28084) is showcasing two new single-dose purge compounds that come in individual packets—expanding its original QuickShots liquid in pouch product line. These compounds allow operators to purge their machinery by simply dropping the packets into the feed throat/hopper of their machine and work with all resin types on all plasঞcs machinery processes. New Quick- Shots HD (heavy duty) has glass prills mixed in for extra cleaning strength, and SP (pellets in a pouch) includes an extra small 1 / 2 oz. version, ideal for lab lines and small runs. Asaclean UF2 is reportedly ideal for purging blown and cast film extrusion as well as injecঞon molding. By Lilli Manolis Sherman Plascs Technology With support from global energy power, Royal Dutch Shell, Shell Chemicals is intro- ducing Shell Polymers—a new line of busi- ness dedicated to building the "unrivaled customer experience" that's supported by the company's new PiŽsburgh-area world- scale petrochemical facility. Visitors to Booth S16001 can find out more first hand from the Shell team about the new Polyethalene business. Shell says its recently launched cam- paign—Start Believing—reinforces the com- pany's commitment to the customer commu- nity, and the way daily business is led. Says Shell Polymers' general manager Emma Lewis. "With immediate access to world- class talent, industry resources and technical knowledge, Shell Polymers aims to change the way day-to-day business in polyethylene is currently conducted. The Pennsylvania Chemicals Project will be the first Shell-oper- ated polyethylene producঞon facility in com- pany history and will provide a variety of fu- ture opportuniঞes and stability to the local Beaver County economy." The world-scale petrochemical facility, located 30 miles northwest of PiŽsburgh in Beaver County, provides proximity to more than 70% of the North American PE market. Close to both supply and markets, the new facility will decrease economic and environ- mental transportaঞon costs and provide re- gional plasঞc manufacturers with more flexi- bility, shorter supply chains and enhanced supply dependability. Once complete, the facility anঞcipates an average capacity of 3.3 billion lb/yr of ethylene and three PE units—LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE—with a com- bined producঞon capacity of approximately 3.5 billion lb/yr. The Shell Polymers Innovaঞon Center will be located at the site and become a regional technology hub for customers. The center will consist of a state-of-the-art ana- lyঞcal and materials tesঞng lab, which will allow for a close collaboraঞon between cus- tomers and a world-class team to develop unique product soluঞons, explains Lewis. Shell Polymers has put in place an extensive team of industry experts to deliver class-leading customer experience plus the tools and technology to create a step- change of customer saঞsfacঞon in the in- dustry, she says. The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) Design Center features companies providing design services, technology, and so[ware for the plasঞcs industry. Founded in 1965, the IDSA is a nonprofit U.S.-based professional society of industrial designers. It promotes the pracঞce of indus- trial design through educaঞon, informaঞon, community and advocacy. According to Execuঞve Director Chris Livaudais, IDSA has thousands of members in dozens of student chapters, professional chapters and special-interest secঞons in the U.S. and internaঞonally. IDSA also sponsors the annual Interna- ঞonal Design Excellence Awards (IDEA), the world's most presঞgious and rigorous design compeঞঞon. The IDSA Design Center is fea- turing a display of 2017 IDEA Gold-level award-winners whose designs prominently feature plasঞcs. These include Google's Day- dream View, a headset and moঞon controller for experiencing high-quality immersive vir- tual reality. The headset holds a specialized "Daydream-ready" phone.
