By Tony Deligio Plascs Technology Collecঞng and sharing data are an integral part of Industry 4.0 connecঞvity and Maguire Products Inc. (Booth W5747) will showcase an energy-monitoring capability on the new- est member of VBD line of vacuum resin dry- ers. The VBD-600 intermediate-range model has 600 pounds (275 kg) per hour of drying capacity, and it joins the VBD 150, VBD 300 and VBD 1000. The energy-monitoring capa- bility will be displayed on a new touch-screen controller. Maguire is also introducing a compact sys- tem that combines loading, dosing, mixing, and dispensing. The Micro Tower mixes up to three materials—such as virgin resin, regrind and masterbatch—in 10-lb (4.5-kg) batches. Throughputs range up to 100 lb/hr (45 kg/hr) for the compact tower, which mounts at the throat of the processing machine, with no floor space required for a vacuum pump. The loader and hoppers operate on a loss-in- weight basis under simultaneous direcঞon by the controller for greater accuracy. In addiঞon to those products, Frank Kava- nagh, v.p. sales, says the company's line of weigh scale blenders, gravimetric feeders, vacuum dryers and gaylord sweepers are on hand. In terms of running equipment, visitors can check out the WXB gravimetric extrusion blender with a loss-in-weight mix chamber. Running in demo mode, the WXB is simulat- ing a 3-layer blown film line. Kavanagh says this display also highlights Maguire's Line- Master extrusion control system, and the Maguire + Syncro line of downstream extru- sion products. These include an air ring, IBC control, bubble control, gauging control and measurement. Also in operaঞon is the FlexBus materials handling system, including the FlexBus Lite, an embedded control in the 4088 controller that can integrate with Maguire receivers like the GHR and LowPro, as well as third-party lines. A gaylord sweeper system through the new MMX material transfer manifold system is in the booth, as is an MGF gravimetric color feeder running in demo mode to display a patented 100% color dispense feature. Finally a LowPro vacuum receiver is dis- played. Maguire products will also be running in the booths of Sumitomo (SHI) Demag, Maruka USA, Yizumi HPM, Magic MP, and the Syncro Group. Home-Grown Producঞon Monitoring System Brings Industry 4.0 to Smaller Shops Smart Aend Director of Sales and Markeঞng Max Preston shows the producঞon monitor at work in automoঞve molding. By Mahew H. Naitove Plascs Technology Three to four years ago, Axiom Group, a Ca- nadian Tier 1 automoঞve molder, started looking around for a producঞon-monitoring system and concluded that the commercial products on the market were too costly and too complex, requiring weeks of personnel training and expensive installaঞon. "Let's build our own," was the response of Perry Rizzo, Axiom's president, co-founder, and co-owner. The result was Smart Aend, the first pro- totype of which was installed on an injecঞon machine in early 2016. It is now used on all injecঞon machines at Axiom's headquarters plant, and on machining systems in its tooling operaঞons. Smart-Aend terminals are at each lead hand's desk and in the central of- fice. A large Smart Aend screen is located on a wall of the molding floor and has be- come an anchor site for producঞon team meeঞngs. Last June, Smart Aend became available commercially to other processors and moldmakers—and you can see it here at Booth S10029. As explained by Max Preston, director of sales and markeঞng for Smart Aend, the product is based on key concepts of simplici- ty, affordability, fast setup (two to four hours, in most cases, without need of specially trained personnel), and ease of use. Another key concept is immediate availability of im- portant, useful data—not a digital blizzard of informaঞon—to everyone who can use it. "With Smart Aend, data goes instantly from machines to managers," says Preston, add- ing that "Big Data does not equal smart data. A produc- ঞon-monitoring system does not need to provide a lot of data, but just crucially import- ant data, usable data, acঞon- able data." conঞnued on page 24 22
