NPE 2018 WEST HALL 2600 PRODUCED BY As NPE2018 Opens, It's All Systems Go for Carteaux, Industry By Jim Callari Plascs Technology The ribbon-cuমng ceremony done, it was ঞme for Bill Carteaux to start his first walk of the NPE show floor. A colleague at his side, he weaved his way through a scažering of exhibitors running late, scrambling to get to their booths, like schoolkids who got up too late racing for the bus. He's smiling broadly, shaking hands. He has what you might call a confident walk—not a strut or a swagger— making him appear taller than he is. A lot has to do with his posture, back straight, shoul- ders thrust back, head up and eyes forward. Now maybe 100 feet from the show en- trance, he encountered an exhibitor known for his good-natured ribbing of the trade as- sociaঞon execuঞve. "Good to see you smiling Bill," this parঞcular exhibitor wisecracked. Carteaux, the president and CEO of what was then the Society of the Plasঞcs Industry, didn't miss a beat in his reply, "It's the NPE show, buddy. Not a pity party. Nothing but smiles all week." Except it was NPE2009, the last show in Chicago, held as the economy was circling the drain, the plasঞcs market was contract- ing and—in the months preceding the June show in McCormick Place—a number of des- perate exhibitors, with the order pipeline empty, were trying to scale back or even cancel their plans to display. Carteaux now runs the same organizaঞon as president and CEO, now called Plasঞcs Industry Associaঞon (PLASTICS). Except that his roots are not those of what might be con- sidered a Washington, D.C. insider, or a "trade associaঞon guy." Before he took the associaঞon's top spot in 2005, he was "an industry guy," specifically a top execuঞve with injecঞon molding machine builders Demag Plasঞcs Group and before conঞnued on page 81 By Hannah Mason Plascs Technology A month out from the event, NPE2018 was already breaking its own records. The Plasঞcs Industry Associaঞon (PLASTICS) announced that NPE2018 had broken the record for amount of floor space sold to exhibitors. More than 1.2 million [ 2 of exhibit space have been sold for NPE this year, beaঞng NPE2015's record of 1.13 million [ 2 by over 71,000 [ 2 . But this isn't the first record that NPE2018 has broken this show cycle. According to Susan Krys, Vice President, trade shows and markeঞng at PLASTICS, this year's show started breaking records more than a year ago, with the NPE2018 Space Draw in March 2017. Ahead of the draw, space requests from exhibitors for NPE2018 had already exceeded NPE2015's draw by more than 25%. "We predict that this pre-show momen- tum will conঞnue, making NPE2018: The Plasঞcs Show one of the largest industry gatherings ever," Krys said.
